Resource Centre Opens The Door On Home Safety

The Kidsafe Tasmania Safety Resource Centre opens the door on the dangers to children which exist in the home. Located at Abbotsfield Primary School, in Abbotsfield Rd, Claremont, the centre is a valuable source of information for anyone interested in the safety of children.

The centre includes a kitchen, bathroom and bedroom and shows the potential hazards in each of these rooms and offers practical advice on what can be done to avoid them. Separate displays also focus on safety in areas such as playgrounds, cars, water and roads. Safety devices – such as safety plugs and catches, stove and oven knob covers, corner cushions, tap protectors and flow guards – can also be purchased at the centre. A range of information sheets and brochures covering child safety issues is also available free-of-charge from the centre.

Opened in 2003 by the Tasmanian Minister for Education, the Hon. Paula Wriedt, The centre is an important resource in Kidsafe`s mission to prevent the unintentional death and injury to Tasmanian children.

Each day in Australia 5000 children require medical attention, 170 are admitted to hospital and one child dies – all as a result of unintentional injuries. Most of these injuries occur in the home and at school.

The centre is located in the schools administration building and is opened from 10.30 a.m. until 2.30 p.m. from Monday to Thursday during school terms and at other times by arrangement.
